Dirty Dusting

SYNOPSIS: Dirty Dusting is set in an office block in the 1970s-80s. It is a tale about three elderly cleaning ladies, Elsie, Gladys and Olive, who are told by their boss, Dave, that they are going to be made redundant. Then by chance of an accidental phone call to the office they are working in the three ladies decide to use the company's office to operate a sex chat line to make extra money. But they need to do it without anyone else knowing about it including husbands, children, grandchildren or their boss. Can they keep it their little secret?

CHARACTERS:

GLADYS: Gladys is a lady of mature years definitely past retirement age (65-75). She has only really had one love in her life which is her husband, Billy. He loves growing leeks. Gladys is a bit naive about certain aspects of life but has been known to have a bit of fun in her distant past. She is a cleaner in same office block as her two friends Elsie and Olive.

ELSIE: Elsie is also a lady of mature years (65-75). She is divorced and idolises her grandson Who she likes to buy things for. She has definitely been around the block a few times and has a wicked sense of humour. She is the one who will do anything to get by in life. She is also a cleaner in the same office block Gladys and Olive.

OLIVE: Olive is another lady of mature years (65-75). She is the more serious one of the three and spent 60 years in the girl guides, 30 of them as guide leader as she keeps reminding her two friends. She does have a bit of a past which her two friends Gladys and Elsie knew nothing about, until now. She is also a cleaner in the same office block as Gladys and Elsie.

Anyone auditioning for the role of Olive will be required to sing a few bars of I WANNA BE LOVED BY YOU by Marilyn Monroe. Words are attached below.

DAVE: Dave is the Supervisor over the three ladies who he thinks are well past their sell by date. He is delighted when the company is going to make the three ladies redundant and he looks forward to seeing younger dolly birds under him.

He also has a special interest in vacuum cleaners.

The idea to form a drama group, particularly with the “more mature” person in mind, came to Barry Carder in early 2012 as he reached his 60th birthday. He started thinking about what interests he could consider for his retirement. As Barry said: “If you Google 'plays for seniors', you come up with a lot of details about groups in America, but not so much referencing activities over here. Hopefully once the Holland-on-Sea community has seen our current production, it will also get the thespian bug and we will be able to persuade a number of them to join our group and share in our love of all things connected to theatre, because theatre isn’t just for the young; it’s for everyone.”
