Noda Review
Moving away from the previous productions HOSTS did a great job with a real mystery whodunit drama in Cat’s Cradle with a cast including some new members which is always good to see.
In the lead character Inspector Frost played by David Lye was very competent in this role with a great deal of dialogue to learn and on stage for most of the production. A relaxed performance and most enjoyable.
Justine Smith as Peggy Fletcher was a feisty character as the Receptionist in the “Cresswell Arms” and together with Fred Gregory as her husband Sam, both were aware of happenings twelve years ago which Inspector Frost was investigating and revisiting trying to piece together an unsolved crime.
Miss Merton a retired Doctor, now residing in the hotel and played by Ann Maire Botterell was in her debut role with the company, and gave a good account as a rather confused elderly lady who was also involved in the events so many years ago.
A wall of silence around so many characters all hiding information which gave the audience so many complex idea’s leading up to the ultimate end when all was surprisingly revealed.
I thought that Bridget Gregory as Pamela Fulton was excellent in this role, confident and looking every inch in command when faced with some difficult issues and also cover up’s.
Molly Ridgeon as Sarah her daughter in her first role with the company was perfect especially in a very emotional scene in Act two which was timed so well by Molly. I hope we see her involved in more productions here.
Jake Jackson another newcomer to HOSTS played Bob Marriott a local newspaper journalist in love with Sarah. Jake did well although at times his dialogue needed to be louder and with more experience I am sure that Jake will do well in future productions.
Barry Sargeant as Sir Charles Cresswell a rather “upper class” gentleman, was confident and moved well on stage. When playing a part which requires a rather “posh” style in speech care needs to be taken to maintain this and it lapsed here and there with Sir Charles.
The dialogue at times was a little slow when revelations re the past were coming to light, but I thought it a really good effort all round and a creditable performance from all the cast.
Well directed by Ann Mortimer in this first mystery production with HOSTS.
I know a lot of work goes into all the shows here and the company works hard to perform a good standard always.
I appreciated your hospitality and welcome. Good luck with future productions.
