Noda Review

A new play to me involving the rivalry between opposing Bowls Clubs, Valleywood and West Worth, and the length’s both teams would be prepared to go to in winning the end of season match.
A cast of ten all involved in the plot, from Sam played by Barry Carder,Bobby played by David Lye and Alice played by Bridget Gregory, all committed members of the Valleywood team, facing Natalie,Joe Nicky and Christine for the West Worth team.
I felt that Bridget got right behind her character as Alice, and together with the two gents Sam and Bobby there was some amusing incidents and dialogue.
David Lye as Bobby was getting blamed for a great deal of the “going’s on” mostly by Sam who was rather on Bobby’s case most of the play.
The West Worth team were all very well turned out in their smart bowls attire and all did well with some fiery moments with their rivals.
The local Policewomen Pat played very well by Jade Eden was a great character to play from a rather correct Policewoman to a very drunk one, and together with Tim Barrett as another undercover Policeman Les, some very amusing situations occurred one evening together with members of the Valleywood team with their devious plot within the production.
The set was quite suitable but did have some restrictions with entrances and exits. It was a good idea to use part of the hall between the audience seating area to start the play, but rather restricted the audience knowing what was going on to some extent.
The costumes all were well suited but I did not understand why one cast member after a match went off stage and then came back attired in an evening dress? All the rest of the team stayed in their bowls attire.
I felt the pace was rather slow, and  a few prompts here and there which also tended to interrupt the flow of dialogue, but a valiant effort from a small group, who really try to present entertainment for the local people’s enjoyment.
This was Justine’s first venture into directing and she did well with the production. I hope that Justine will direct again for the group as the more experience she gains will give confidence to future shows.
A good effort and great fun.
